The Minute Man Monument commemorates the April 28 1777 battle between patriot and British forces as the latter returned to their ships from their march to destroy a Danbury munitions depot and the Battle of Ridgefield. Prominent local citizen William H. Burr led the effort to create a memorial to the resistance to British troops beginning in 1902. After some initial resistance, public funds were approved, and a design by H. Daniel Webster was selected in 1909. Webster lived in Westport at the former home of Noah Nash, 56 Sylvan Road North, where he built a studio.
